INTRODUCTION

We have discussed that the Holy Spirit is God’s promise for the believer and He is a person not a force. We will now discuss how to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 1. You must be born again. Acts 2:38-39, John 1:15-17. Being born again is not the same thing as being filled with the Spirit. They are two separate experiences although they are both carried out by the same Holy Spirit.

  • When you are born again, your sins are forgiven and your spirit is recreated to become like God in true righteousness and holiness. John 4:13-14.
  • When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you are literally filled with the Holy Spirit and endowed with supernatural gifts and abilities to enable you to carry out your God-given purpose. John 7:37-39, Acts 1:8. E.g.
  • The Disciples Acts 2
  • Paul Acts 9:17-18
  • Cornelian household Acts 10:1-2, 39-48
  • Disciples in Ephesus Acts 19:1-7

    2. You must desire, ask and receive by faith. Luke 11:5-13. Everything we receive from God, we receive by faith.

  • We must have a desire to receive it. Mark 11:23. God will not force His promises on us.
  • We must know what belongs to us. Romans 10:17.
  • We must ask. Asking is proof of our desire. Speaking our desire to God is asking. Luke 11:9-13.
  • We must believe that we receive because God cannot lie. He said everyone that asks receives and everyone that seeks, finds. ‘Everyone’ means everyone. James 1.
  • Give thanks for the Holy Spirit because you believe that you have received. Act in faith as someone who has. Sometimes someone who is already filled with the Holy Spirit may lay hands on you to encourage your faith and allow a flow of the anointing. However, whether someone lays hands on you or not, if you believe you have received by faith, give thanks. The Holy Spirit will give you utterance in tongues. It is up to you to speak in tongues. In Acts 2:4, it says that the disciples spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (or enabled them). The same thing happens today.

Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
